Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best age to start guitar? While there are no age requirements for any instrument, we highly suggest that a student be at least 8 years of age before starting to learn to play guitar. The motor skills required just to get a sound out of the instrument can make the beginning part of the learning curve a little bit steep for children under the age of 8. If your younger child is really eager to play a stringed instrument, we recommend starting with a ukelele.
What kind of guitar should I start lessons on? There are three main types of guitars you may be thinking of purchasing/renting. They are: electric, steel-stringed acoustic, and nylon-stringed acoustic. Each type of guitar has its own unique sound, shape and feel, among other differences. We recommend that all beginners start with a nylon string guitar. These are the easiest on the fingers, and make the initial learning phase much smoother. Once you’re comfortable on a nylon string, you can explore any other options you’d like.
How do I tune my guitar? There are many ways to tune an instrument. One way is to simply tune by ear. Another way is to play a reference note, and tune to that note. However, the best and most effective way to tune your guitar is by using a guitar tuner. Guitar tuners are an inexpensive (sometimes less than $20!) and easy way to ensure that each string is perfectly in tune, and they are very intuitive to use.
Should I play with a pick or just pluck with my fingers? At Generation Music, we ensure that students learn how to do both! Each technique has its own sound and feel, and each are appropriate in different musical scenarios. By learning how to pluck/finger pick, students develop the ability to “feather” the strings, play melody and bass at the same time, and enhance their individual finger technique. By using a pick, students develop the ability to play chords, single note melody lines, alternate picking direction and manage dynamics string by string. We encourage students to explore all methods and playing techniques to find what really resonates with them.
